Ebel Company History:

Ebel was founded in 1911 by Eugene Blum and Alice Levy (husband and wife) in the Swiss town of La Chaux-De-Fonds and is an acronym of the initials "Eugene Blum et Levy." Eugene focused on the technical side while Alice focused on the aesthetics. Just three years after starting the company, they received their first award, a gold medal at the Swiss National Exhibition in Bern. In 1935, they were the first Swiss watch company to use the Western Electric System which was a predecessor to the Vibrograph. During World War II, Ebel supplied most of the watches for the British Army- a great indication of their status. Ebel launched the Piguet caliber 96 in 1955, which at the time was the world's thinnest movement (1.7mm thick). During 1977 and 1978, they created the concept of "The Architects of Time." In the 80's they started using sports sponsorship as a marketing tool in events like the Monte Carlo tennis Open, the Davis Cup tennis championship, and the Swiss Open European Masters golf championship. Nowadays Ebel uses world-renowned celebrities to advertise their watches, including supermodels like Claudia Schiffer and most recently Gisele Bundchen. One of Ebel's most popular and influential models was named for the manufacturer's founding year: the 1911. Other well-known models include the Beluga, the Voyager, and the Sportwave. Many people consider pre-owned Ebel watches, used Ebel watches & second hand Ebel watches all the same, but a Gray & Sons Ebel watch is something different altogether.
