Picking the Right Rolex Datejust

ARTICLE DATE 02/08/2017

Many would agree that in the Rolex world, models like the Daytona and the Submariner usually steal most of the limelight. Ask any collector, and chances you’ll hear nothing but praises when it comes to the brand’s most popular sport models while the Datejust (also technically a sport model) is often critically overlooked. At Gray and Sons Jewelers, we have an ever-changing inventory of secondhand Rolex Datejust watches.

Besides a model like the Explorer I, the Datejust is a watch that offers a blend of both refinement and rugged appeal while fully encompassing that true Rolex DNA. Another interesting point is the fact that Rolex offers such a huge variety of Datejust models today and it has become increasingly easy to find a reference that fits your style.

When most people think of the Datejust, it’s pretty easy to visualize the most popular 36mm reference as a strict “dress watch.” There’s no doubt that the Datejust certainly shines in that area but this is still an Oyster case with some casual sport appeal as well. Introduced in 1945, the Datejust presented quite a milestone for Rolex – the quick changing date feature.

These early models show just how long the basic design has endured but it wasn’t until the introduction of the caliber 1065 in 1957 that we saw a design reminiscent of the Datejust models we have today. Fun fact: at around this time, the average Datejust retailed for about $350.

Today, the catalog of Datejust models has grown tremendously and Rolex offers a range of men’s and women’s sizes, precious metals, bracelets, and dial options that can really leave the buyer with quite a difficult decision. Arguably, the modern references with the caliber 3135 feature a more masculine case design even at 36mm. If wrist size is an issue and you’re more comfortable with a diameter of 40mm and up, the Datejust II introduced in 2009 delivers bolder wrist presence at 41mm while retaining most of the Datejust heritage.

Bracelet options are also a point to consider and most models are available with both standard Oyster and Jubilee style bracelets. While the Jubilee bracelet knocks the dressy look out of the park, the Oyster really bumps up the Datejust’s versatility with a look that can pass off as both dressy and sporty. As with all Rolex watches, you can’t go wrong with an aftermarket leather strap as well.

Rolex Datejust models even come in as small as 28mm in diameter for some of the women’s models. But let’s not forget, when it comes to Rolex, nearly any size works beautifully as a women’s watch. Pair that versatility with with stainless steel, two-tone, platinum, yellow gold, and everose gold case options and you have yourself a huge selection to choose from.
