New Jaeger-LeCoultre Watch: 2017 Reverso Tribute Moon

ARTICLE DATE 03/08/2017

Jaeger-LeCoultre expanded upon their Reverso collection during this year’s SIHH. For 2017, the manufacture has released two new models sporting the brand’s famed dual face: the Reverso Tribute Duo and the Reverso Tribute Moon. A gorgeous modern piece that harks back to the Art Deco movement, we examine the stainless steel Reverso Tribute Moon, which has been inspired by JLC’s original 1931 model. We love this new Jaeger-LeCoultre watch.

At Gray & Sons, we stock an inventory of pre-owned Jaeger-LeCoultre watches including the Reverso, the Master Control, the Master Compressor, the Master Geographic, and so on. Additionally, as a leading used watch dealer don’t miss our selection of other used watches for sale online.

The Iconic Jaeger-LeCoultre Watch: A Brief History

Designed at the outset as the first “sports watch,” the Reverso was conceived as a practical timepiece that would enable polo players to protect the crystal face of their watch — via the Reverso dial’s ability to flip over — while playing this lively game. Now an iconic watch, the Reverso has seen many iterations and variations through the ages, so much so that it became Jaeger-LeCoultre’s signature product.

It was in 1994, though, with the launch of the Reverso Duoface, that the haute horology world witnessed an unparalleled technical feat in watchmaking mastery. Jaeger-LeCoultre created a two-sided dial driven by a single movement allowing for a change in style midway through the day or the accommodation of a second time zone, which, today, defines the Duo models.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Moon for 2017 celebrates this JLC-exclusive invention while offering a beautiful moon phase and date indication on the primary dial, in addition to a second time zone with a day/night indicator on the flip side.

With a case sized at 49.4mm x 29.9mm, this is a substantial Jaeger-LeCoultre watch that commands attention. However, in stainless steel and with a silvered grained main dial, it remains stylish, restrained, and modern. By contrast, giving the timepiece an alternate look, the Reverso Tribute Moon’s secondary dial features a blue opaline-finished face with a velvety Clous de Paris guilloché pattern around its periphery. Both sides feature Dauphine hour and minute hands and faceted, appliqued baton hour-markers. The first dial features these in blue, however, to contrast the silvered face, while the other side highlights the watch’s reversal by boasting them in silver. Following the rectangular design on the fore and circular motif on the back, the collection’s signature railway minute track runs around each of the dials.

Celestial Metaphor

On the primary dial of this Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, the moon phase and date indicator sits at six o’clock. Entirely hammered by hand, the moon disk — surrounded by a starry vault — displays the current lunar phase. And in keeping with the celestial theme, the indicator’s narrow hand is tipped with a crescent moon and points to the date. On the reverse dial, the day/night indicator sits similarly at six o’clock and continues the Reverso Tribute Moon’s celestial metaphor with a sun and moon embellished disk to demonstrate time of day in the second time zone. To enable the rotation of the dial and which face the wearer can enjoy, Jaeger-LeCoultre has placed a discreet trigger on the top of the case, thus at the push of a button the watch transforms.

Paired with a deep blue alligator leather strap, the hue complements the main dial’s blued hour-markers and hands, as well as the moon disk’s star-scattered design. And when compared to the rear dial, the blue face and strap work harmoniously together.

Housed within the Reverso Tribute Moon is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 853A, a hand-wound mechanical movement that contains 223 parts and 19 jewels. The single barrel caliber offers up a power reserve of 42 hours and beats at 21,600 vibrations or 3 Hz per hour. Measuring just 5.15mm in height, this is the powerful movement that drives both dials and each complication.

Priced at $12,700, the Reverso Tribute Moon is middle of the range for a Jaeger-LeCoultre watch. An elegant timepiece that pays homage to a classic while celebrating a multifaceted nature, this complication watch is a solid modern addition to any haute horology collection.
