Patek Philippe made waves with the Calatrava in 1991 when they first released the 33mm Ref. 5000 model, which showcased an off-centered seconds subdial between 4 and 5 o’clock. The unusual design was embraced by Patek fans everywhere. Six years later, in 2005, Patek Philippe unveiled the larger 37mm Calatrava 6000 series with the characteristic subdial. At Baselworld 2017, just in time for the 40th anniversary of the Manufacture’s Caliber 240 movement, the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 6006G made its debut.

This new version — which replaces its predecessor— features an even larger case and updated graphic look. Let’s explore the fine details on this white gold modern beauty.

Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 6006G

Available in 18k white gold and measuring 39mm (up 2mm from the previous line), the new Calatrava replaces the 6000 series originally launched in 2005. Featuring a classic round case design with generously sized lugs that frame the dial and secure the watchstrap, as well as a simple crown at 3 o’clock, this timepiece sits elegantly and comfortably on the wrist. The increase in case size allows for more space on the dial, which displays clean Arabic numerals, a minute circle, an analog date scale on the face’s outer circumference, and the seconds subdial between 4 and 5 o’clock.

At first glance the dial appears to be solid black, however, on closer inspection, each of the watch face’s individual circles exhibits a different finish. The ebony black central circle boasts a fine sunburst finish, while the silver-toned minute circle features a guilloché pattern printed with black minute and five-minute indicators. The hour circle returns to black, but again with a guilloché pattern, while the peripheral date circle holds the sunburst pattern once more. And finally, contrasting the black backdrop, the seconds sub-dial comes in a silver-toned finish.

At the center of the dial sit the hour and minute hands, which have also gone through alteration. Baton-style, yet hollowed out lengthwise, these hands in white lacquer are ostensibly broader yet maintain a lightweight design. Moreover, the Calatrava’s central date hand no longer displays the lunar crescent at its tip, rather, the Ref. 6006G holds an extra-thin, white hand capped with a red-lacquered arrow that points at the date numeral.

Patek’s Caliber 240 PS C

Visible via the sapphire crystal caseback, the self-winding mechanical Caliber 240 PS C powers Patek Philippe’s Ref. 6006G Calatrava. Featuring the Patek Philippe Seal hallmark, this extremely accurate movement contains 191 parts, 27 jewels, and includes a unidirectionally winding 22K gold mini rotor with an engraved Calatrava cross. Boasting a rate tolerance between -3 and +2 seconds per day, the Caliber 240 PS C vibrates at a frequency of 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour (or 3 Hz) and offers the wearer a 48-hour power reserve.

Fitted with a glistening black alligator leather watchstrap with large square scales, the graphic composition of the dial is carried on throughout the watch’s design. Rounded off with a fold-over clasp also in 18K white gold, Patek Philippe has made clear strides to maintain this timepiece’s classic and refined style.

Coming in at about $30,600, the Calatrava Ref. 6006G is moderately priced for a Patek. Considering the watch’s heritage and its range of design updates, haute horology aficionados that appreciate contemporary style will undoubtedly be looking to this piece as a modern addition to their collections.
