The annual calendar is one of the most useful complications available in a mechanical watch; it automatically adjusts the calendar according to the number of days in a month for most of the year. As its name suggests, it only requires one hands-on adjustment annually, when February turns into March. Otherwise, an annual calendar can easily differentiate between months with 30 and 31 days, keeping the watch’s calendar displays accurate for the rest of the year.
Patek Philippe invented the annual calendar complication in 1996 to offer a simplified and easier-to-use version of the intricate perpetual calendar (which can remain accurate until 2100 but is more complicated to use on the wearer's part should it need adjusting). The Patek Philippe Annual Calendar 4948R features a well-proportioned 38mm round case crafted in 18k rose gold, embellished with 347 diamonds weighing approximately 2.65 carats. Adding to the sparkle are also 14 diamonds set into the winding crown weighing approximately 0.06 carats.
Gorgeous case
Housed inside the gorgeous case is an equally striking dial, fashioned from white Balinese mother-of-pearl and set with applied rose gold numerals around the periphery. Towards the center of the dial is the trio of calendar subdials: the month indication at 3 o’clock, the moon phases at 6 o’clock, and the day display at 9 o’clock. Furthermore, below the moon phases is a date window, completing the calendar indications. Finally, the hour, minute, and seconds hands
take their customary position at the center of the dial, with the first two hands benefiting from luminous coating for in-the-dark legibility.
Like the dial side, the back of the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar ref. 4948R is equipped with a sapphire crystal, which offers a view of the in-house movement powering the watch. That mechanical movement is the self-winding Caliber 6‑330 S QA LU with 319 components, 34 jewels, a 21k gold rotor, and a power reserve of 35 to 45 hours. In true Patek Philippe form, the movement is impeccably decorated and finished, including traditional decorative techniques
such as Geneva stripes, perlage, polishing, beveling, and of course, the prestigious engraved Patek Philippe Seal.
