As next year’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève (SIHH) quickly approaches, we take a look at some sneak peeks including these Pre SIHH 2018 Ulysse Nardin watches. Inspired by its own heritage, Ulysse Nardin will launch the Marine Torpilleur Military at SIHH 2018 — a reinvention of the Marine chronometer for the modern watch collector.
New Release: Pre SIHH 2018 Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Military
Following the success of the Marine Torpilleur released earlier in 2017, Ulysse Nardin will use Geneva’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2018 to unveil the Marine Torpilleur Military. A chronometer with roots that originate in the pocket chronometers of 19th and early 20th-century sea captains, this timepiece has been radically redesigned for contemporary times. Remember, Ulysse Nardin’s heritage is steeped in marine culture and the brand continues to celebrate this important part of their history each year.
Featuring a matt, sandblasted stainless steel case 44 mm in diameter, this is not a subtle watch on the wrist. Its clean design, however, is striking in its simplicity and its vintage origins. An extra thin fluted, stainless steel bezel and large screw down security crown give the Marine Torpilleur Military an overall practical look, and the watch’s simple rectangular lugs, which snugly hold the watchstrap in place, only adds to this functionality. Plus, guaranteed water-resistant to 50 meters, this enforces the watch’s sensible nature and use in quotidian life.
Available with an eggshell or black watch face (ref. 1183-320LE/60 and ref. 1183-320LE/62, respectively), both options boast retro style Arabic numerals complete with a drop shadow. These numerals come in a cream for the eggshell dial or orange for the black dial. A discreet minute track circles the watch face’s flange, while elegant hour and minute hands can be found centrally and appear either in black against the eggshell or off-white and superluminova coated against the black.
Encroaching upon the 6 o’clock mark, the dial also features a small direct seconds sub-dial that includes a red serial number (this is a watch limited to a run of just 300 units) and the initials C.W. (which stand for Chronometer Watch). The last elements to make up the Marine Torpilleur Military’s dial design are the “ULYSSE NARDIN LE LOCLE SUISSE” lettering found below the 12 o’clock mark and the subtle “SWISS MADE” found below 6 o’clock.
Ulysse Nardin In-House UN-118 Movement
Powered by the in-house self-winding UN-118 movement, the Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Military is a Marine Chronometer. This manufacture caliber boasts the brand’s proprietary Silicium anchor escapement, an element that Ulysse Nardin is famous for having originated and used first.
Backed by both a COSC certification and an Ulysse Nardin certificate — a double guarantee of the highest performance standards — watch enthusiasts can be sure of this watch’s long-term accuracy and durability. Plus, offering wearers a power reserve of approximately 60 hours, this makes for a good daily watch. Protecting the UN-118 and as a reference to its military heritage, the Marine Torpilleur Military is rounded off with a stainless steel caseback stamped with a Torpilleur (or torpedo) boat.
Paired with either a tan leather strap with eggshell white stitching or a black leather strap with orange stitching to match the respective dials, each Marine Torpilleur Military model enjoys a classic overall style. And priced at approximately $8,000 for each, this is an attainable Marine chronometer by a Swiss luxury watchmaking powerhouse — in other words, a practical and enduring timepiece that Ulysse Nardin fans will be sure to welcome.
The Pre SIHH 2018 Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Military illustrates that the trend for contemporary versions of vintage style watches is still going strong. A great start to the new watch year, we’re excited to see what else Ulysse Nardin has in store for us next month.
