Cartier Serial Number Lookup

Identify the approximate production era of your Cartier watch from its serial number, or decode a Cartier reference number to discover the model family and case material.

Where to find your serial number: On most Cartier watches the serial number is engraved on the caseback, separate from the reference number. Pre-2009 serials are purely numeric; post-2010 serials are randomized alphanumeric.

Enter your Cartier serial number (e.g., 9412345 for a ~1994 watch, or an alphanumeric modern serial)

Serial era dates are estimates based on Cartier's pre-2009 two-digit year prefix convention. Post-2010 serials are randomized and cannot be dated by serial alone. Reference number decoding reflects Cartier's modern W-prefix format; older or special edition references may differ.

Frequently Asked Questions

On most Cartier watches, the serial number is engraved on the caseback. On some models it may also appear between the lugs or on the inner case ring. The serial is typically 6–10 characters. To find it, flip the watch over and look for an engraved number that is separate from the reference number.

For watches made before approximately 2009, the first two digits of a purely numeric serial number often correspond to the production year (e.g., a serial starting with 94 was likely made around 1994). For watches made from 2010 onward, Cartier adopted a randomized alphanumeric serial system that does not encode the year. In that case, the production date can only be confirmed via the warranty card or by an authorized Cartier boutique.

In the modern (post-2010) Cartier serial format, the letters are part of a randomized alphanumeric string and do not individually encode specific information such as year or material. In the older numeric format (pre-2009), the serial was purely digits and the letters were not present. If your serial contains letters, your watch is most likely a post-2010 model.

Modern Cartier reference numbers follow the pattern: W + [material letter] + [2-letter model code] + [4–5 config digits]. The first character is always W (for Watch). The second character encodes the case material (e.g., S = Stainless Steel, R = Rose Gold, G = Yellow Gold, W = White Gold, P = Platinum). Characters 3–4 identify the model family (e.g., SA = Santos, BB = Ballon Bleu, TA = Tank Américaine). The remaining digits are a configuration code. For example, WSSA0089 decodes as: W(watch) + S(steel) + SA(Santos) + 0089(config).

Authentic Cartier watches have a serial number and reference number engraved on the caseback with sharp, clean lines. The crown should bear the Cartier logo or a cabochon sapphire. Fonts on the dial are consistent and precise. To verify authenticity, contact an authorized Cartier retailer or send the watch to Cartier for official authentication. A gray-market or pre-owned Cartier can also be verified through a reputable dealer like Gray & Sons.
