Note how long the watch was stopped, whether it was on a winder, and the last time the calendar was known to be correct. If you know the precise reference, use only its prescribed setting sequence. Avoid cycling correctors repeatedly to chase a display that will not coordinate.
A perpetual calendar is designed around the Gregorian leap-year cycle, but the exact long-term correction required depends on the movement. The year 2100 is not a leap year under the Gregorian rule, even though it is divisible by four; many mechanical perpetual calendars will therefore require a manual correction at that point. This calendar fact is separate from diagnosing a present-day setting fault.

Testing should verify their relationship and observe representative transitions, including month and leap-cycle behavior where the mechanism and approved procedure permit simulation.
Testing does not mean waiting through years of real time, nor can one standard sequence cover every caliber. The workshop should use a movement-appropriate method and document any limitation. Checks of the case and water resistance may also be proposed where relevant, but the achievable result depends on the case, seals, components, and condition.
Service versus restoration
A modern watch with known parts support can present a different project from a rare vintage perpetual calendar. For an older piece, original finishes, prior repairs, replacement components, and collector priorities may affect the plan. Refinishing a dial, hands, movement parts, case, or bracelet should not be bundled into the mechanical work without specific approval.
Where originality matters, the estimate should distinguish necessary functional work from conservation choices. It should also identify findings that cannot be resolved until disassembly and any parts whose availability remains uncertain.
