Gray & Sons Watch Repair Guide

Watch Repair Glossary

Understand common watch repair terms for movements, timing, cases, complications, estimates, service, restoration, refinishing, and testing.

At Gray & Sons, we don’t just repair watches; we restore legacies. Our Swiss-trained master watchmakers live and breathe the intricate mechanics of horology. However, we know that for many enthusiasts, the "anatomy" of a timepiece can feel like a foreign language.

Whether you are bringing in a vintage Rolex for a Complete Overhaul or inquiring about a Crown Replacement for your Patek Philippe, understanding these key terms will help you appreciate the precision involved in our work.

A–C: The Fundamentals

  • Analog: A traditional watch display that uses physical hands to indicate time, rather than a digital readout.
  • Aperture: A small window or "cut-out" on the dial that displays specific information, such as the date, day, or moon phase.
  • Automatic Movement: A mechanical movement with a rotor-based winding system. How motion contributes to winding and how the watch should be started are caliber-specific.
  • Bezel: The ring surrounding the watch crystal. On sports watches, these are often "Rotating Bezels" used to track elapsed time.
  • Bridge: A metal plate that holds the rotating gears in place. Think of it as the structural pillars of the watch's internal architecture.
  • Chronograph: A watch with a built-in stopwatch function, usually operated by "Push Buttons" on the side of the case.

D–L: Protection and Precision

  • Dial: Often called the "face" of the watch. It contains the markers, hands, and branding.
  • Escapement: The "heartbeat" of the watch. This mechanism controls the release of energy from the mainspring to the gears, producing the iconic "ticking" sound.
  • EOL (End-of-Life Indicator): A movement-specific warning available on some quartz calibers; the exact display pattern and meaning must be verified in the manual.
  • Jewels: Synthetic rubies or sapphires used as bearings for the gear train to reduce friction and wear over decades of use.
  • Lugs: The metal "horns" extending from the watch case where the strap or bracelet is attached.

M–S: Power and Performance

  • Mainspring: The coiled spring that stores the energy for a mechanical watch. If your watch has a "Broken Mainspring," it will no longer hold power.
  • Movement: The mechanism or electronic-mechanical system that powers the watch. Manual-wind mechanical, automatic mechanical, and quartz-regulated are common categories, with additional architectures and power systems.
  • Overhaul: A diagnosed and approved complete service whose disassembly, cleaning, parts, lubrication, reassembly, adjustment, and testing follow the exact movement and written repair scope; no universal factory-equivalence outcome is implied.
  • Power Reserve: How long a watch is designed to run from a defined state of wind or charge. Expected duration and measurement conditions are movement-specific.
  • Sapphire Crystal: A highly scratch-resistant transparent cover. At Gray & Sons, we often perform Crystal Replacements for clients who have chipped or scratched their original glass.
  • Screw-Lock Crown: A threaded crown/case interface used on some watches. Its position alone does not prove present water resistance; follow the exact manual and current test status.

T–Z: Specialty Features

  • Tachymeter: A scale found on the bezel or dial of a chronograph, used to calculate speed based on travel time over a fixed distance.
  • Tourbillon: A high-end complication where the escapement and balance wheel are housed in a rotating cage to counteract the effects of gravity on accuracy.
  • Ultrasonic Cleaning: A process where watch cases and bracelets are submerged in a vibrating solution to remove microscopic debris and buildup.
