Watch of the Month - Vacheron Constantin Malte Tonneau Tourbillon 30066/2

Why We Love It: This month we’re taking a look at something very special from Vacheron. Vacheron Constantin is part of the “holy horological trinity” (Patek, AP, and Vacheron) and it is easy to see why. The brand has a history dating back to 1755 and has produced some of the most desirable timepieces around. This includes the reference 57260 - the most complicated watch in the world. But today, we’re looking at something slightly more restrained. This is the Vacheron Constantin Malte Tonneau Tourbillon. It’s an all-platinum, tonneau shaped watch that pridefully encompasses all things Vacheron in a contemporary and wearable piece. Let’s take some time to learn more about it.

Design: The Vacheron Constantin Malte Tonneau Tourbillon measures 36mm wide and 36mm long. As complex as it seems, the watch elegantly displays only the time, date, and power reserve indications. This restrained display gives considerable light to the tourbillon, which is front and center (as it should be). Though the dimensions appear small, the tonneau design still results in a bold look with considerable wrist presence.

Dial: Aside from those appointments, the dial is beautifully minimal. A textured, almost fluted pattern, runs along the periphery of the dial and pairs perfectly with the beveled sword hands. Since the tourbillon window is also dedicated to subsidiary seconds, you don’t have a large sweep hand cluttering things up. At 10 o’clock you have your power reserve indicator and at 2 o’clock there is a dedicated date sub-dial. That’s about all you need and it’s nice to see restraint in a timepiece sporting a prominent tourbillon.

Movement: Through the exhibition case back, we get a clear view of the cal. 1790 manual winding, 27 jewel movement. It exists specifically for the Malte collection once Vacheron decided to incorporate tonneau shaped watches into the line-up. Once again, it appears minimal for such a complex piece. But, that is the charm. The movement also features a range of decorations and fits the elegance of the timepiece overall.

Strap: The Vacheron Constantin Malte Tonneau Tourbillon watch comes on a lovely black alligator strap with a platinum tang buckle. Naturally, the Vacheron logo is part of the buckle itself, which is a nice touch. Additionally, the strap provides a contoured and soft fit to support the watch’s design.
