Basic Maintenance on Automatic/Manal Watches
Gray & Sons - Top Watch Repair Service Center For High Caliber Watches
Today we will break down what goes into giving your watch an overhaul and detail. While the maintenance of quartz watches is just simply changing the battery or exchanging the movement, automatic and manual wind watches are far more intricate movements to service.
You don’t have to wait to run into problems with your timepiece in order to give it regular maintenance. In fact, servicing your timepiece every 3-5 years is not only recommended but prevents watches from experiencing irreversible damage. Negligence to servicing a watch is often the reason clients come into our store with repairs that cost them a few thousand dollars rather than the typical couple of hundred dollars.
Think about it like this; let’s say one goes several months without taking their car to the shop for an oil change or basic car maintenance. Pretty soon, what could have been a simple $100 or less fix turns into a multi-hundred dollar repair. The same goes for mechanical watches.
Every watch that comes into Gray and Sons Jewelers for repair will automatically receive a 12-month warranty once received by the customer post-repair, 24-months for Rolex watches only. Continue reading to learn more about the repair process.
Behind The Scenes of a Watch Repair
Overhaul & Detailing of A Manual or Automatic Watch
First things first, we open the case back of the watch. Here, we look for any rusted or damaged parts that need replacing. Once we’ve diagnosed the problem on the watch and know what extra parts are needed, our watchmaker takes apart the watch piece by piece and prepares it for cleaning.
The movement, crystal, and watch stem are separated from the head and bracelet. The case and bracelet are given to our head polisher while our watchmakers begin working on the movement. Piece by piece, our watchmaker completely disassembles the watch’s mechanism evaluating every piece.
Once the watch parts that need replacing are identified, our watchmaker prepares the standing parts to be cleaned and sources the parts that need to be replaced. We use six different cleaning solutions in an ultrasonic machine to make sure all dirt, dust, and dried oils are extracted from every crevice within the watch parts.
Watch Movement Taken Apart
Once the watch parts are cleaned, the watchmaker starts to reassemble the movement while adding lubricants wherever designated and replacing all the gaskets for water resistance. This tedious process usually takes around 1 to 2 hours per watch! Of course, assuming the watchmaker isn’t interrupted and all parts continue functioning properly.
Once our watchmaker puts together the movement and re-cases the watch, it's time for the final steps of our repair process. Before returning the client their watch, we must execute a final quality control process to assure the watch is running as accurately as possible.
In this quality control process, we measure the watch’s amplitude and water resistance. We use two special machines to do this. One listens to the heartbeat of the watch, the other simulates a deep plunge using encapsulated air pressure.
This way, we get to hear how well the watch is ticking. While also checking for any leaks throughout the watch case. If the watch passes both amplitude and water tests, the watch gets put on our winding wheel for observation where it rotates and mimics the movement of the wrist.
With this machine, we can analyze the power reserve on the watch. This is to make sure the automatic is providing power up to par throughout the day. Our entire repair process usually takes around 3 to 6 weeks total.
