Rolex Datejust Bracelet Rebuild and Service
"A Crown for every achievement." Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis started Rolex in 1905 and have been producing ever since. Early on, Rolex was not the original name used; W&D was imprinted on the case backs of every watch. In fact, it took years of using other companies movements and cases before they started making their own. There are many different rumors as to how the name “Rolex” was created, ranging from it was made up to it was derived from a French phrase "horlogerie exquise" meaning exquisite clockwork. However, until this day no one knows what the name Rolex truly comes from. Presently Rolex watches have been known for their reliability and dependability.
Today we will be speaking about the Rolex Datejust with all of its features and characteristics. In fact, Gray and sons received a Rolex Datejust for service and bracelet rebuild in our workshop which we will also be discussing.
First we will be talking about the Rolex Datejust. In 1945 the Rolex Datejust was first introduced (a quick set date mechanism was added in 1978); this was a first for any wristwatch. Because the Rolex Datejust was manufactured when watchmaking was still in early stages of development the Rolex Datejust started off being automatic and (post 1978) some models were made Quartz. Many Rolex Datejust have “Oyster Perpetual” on the dial, what this means is that the watch is automatic (hence perpetual) and can be submerged underwater (hence oyster). The Rolex Datejust has an exquisite look and style; you can get it in stainless steel, two tone or 18k gold. If you’re looking for more of a formal look, you can also choose to wear it on a leather, crocodile, alligator or ostrich band. If the Datejust is on a all metal band then it will either be a Jubilee style bracelet or an Oyster style bracelet. The Rolex Datejust will come with sweep seconds and date. The dial will feature a multitude of different colors. As a matter of fact, the Rolex Datejust is the number one luxury watch in which people customize its dial.
At Gray and sons we are currently repairing this model, we are doing a full bracelet rebuild as well as a service. Exploring this watch further, it has a fluted bezel, blue dial and stick hour markers. The bracelet is jubilee with a deployant buckle.
A long-time client of ours brought it in, but not only because it wasn’t keeping time; the watch’s band was extremely worn.. At Gray and sons we have been performing service on all Rolex's since 1980. Our Swiss trained master watchmakers have combined experienced of over 150 years. Rolex recommends servicing your watch every 3-5 years to make sure the watch is running efficiently with fresh lubrication. The repair for this watch starts with disassembling the bracelet from the case to prep the watch for the band rebuild. Simultaneously our master watchmaker will take the case of the watch and start to dissemble first checking the movement of the watch, checking all of the gears, mainspring, crown and balance wheel to see if everything is functional. We will then clean all of the parts and determine what will need lubrication (using only the highest quality oils) and make sure all old oils, dirt, and oxidation are removed. Once everything is assembled back together part by part we will begin a detailed quality control of the watch. We check for amplitude ,beat rate and the water resistance. Lastly we will check back in on the bracelet rebuild process. Our jeweler will first disassemble the entire bracelet. Next, take all of pins and hinges and refurbishing them. Every link is then polished with precision making sure it has a very brilliant finish. Finally the jeweler will take all of the links and reassemble the bracelet tightly to send back to the watchmaker to reassemble with the case.
