Panerai Submersible Chrono 100 (PAM 187) Watch Repair
For almost 40 years Gray & Sons has been buying, selling and repairing high end luxury Swiss watches and estate jewelry. Located right across from the world famous Bal Harbor Shops and a few steps away from the beautiful and sunny Miami beaches, we are the one stop location for brands such as Rolex, Cartier, Breitling, Omega, Patek Phillipe and many more. In the watch world, each brand is recognized by their originality. Rolex with their beautiful and elegant crown logo. Breguet’s stylish blue pomme hands. Franck Muller’s tonneau shaped cases and wacky dials. Then there is Panerai, known for their large bulky watch cases. Today, a Panerai reference PAM187 more commonly known as the Panerai Submersible Chrono 1000 came in for a repair in the workshop.
This watch was purchased from one of our clients who was upgrading to something more prestigious. Just like with all our watches, once a new watch comes into our store, the first step is for our watchmakers to assess its authenticity and condition. With over 150 of combined experience, our 6 Swiss trained master watchmakers are not only able to service and repair most Swiss luxury watches but also ensures that all parts and internal components are factory original. This Panerai Submersible needed some loving and repairing! The strap had some serious wear and even though it was brought in with box and papers, one important tool was missing. The octagon shaped quick date set tool. This tool is very important to this watch. Without it the date cannot be set without going through all 31 days the calendar, but we will get back to that.
This Panerai was screaming service and maintenance. The Submersible Chrono 1000 (PAM 187) is also supposed to be water resistant up to 1000 feet, but that sea dried up a long time ago for this watch Submersible. This meant new gaskets and were added to ensure the depths could be achieved so that if its new owner decided to dive under the sea. The Panerai Submersible Chrono 1000, powered by the Valjoux 7753 movement, 26 Jewels, is disassembled by our master watchmaker. This is a very laborious process since all parts inside the watch are miniscule and must be worked on under magnification. After the movement is taken apart, it is meticulously cleaned on our 4 step ultrasonic Tempo machine. During this process, the Valjoux 7753 is processed through 1 cleaning solution and a 3 step rinsing solution. This step during the cleaning process executed so that all old oils and dirty lubricants are removed from each moving part of the movement and is ready for new lubricants to be set. After a good cleaning and detailing on the Panerai case, by our in-house master polisher, the watch is ready to be put back together. Part by part and with new lubrication and oils, all parts bring back the beautiful Valjoux 7753 movement to life. After the watch is assembled and checked with our timing machines and special water testing to ensure that this watch will withstand depths of up to 1000 ft, it is now ready for our quality control. Remember the tool we didn’t have at the beginning of this story? Well, our master watchmakers are not only experts in watchmaking but also artist in many crafts. The tool shown in the picture needed to be built from scratch up to Swiss specifications.
This tool as mentioned earlier on is made to screw in and out the date quick set pusher and without it makes it very inconvenient for adjusting the date. You can see this pusher by the 10 o’clock position right next to the Helium escape valve. A new band was also installed on this watch. We carry a large inventory of replacement bands for Panerai and for many other brands. After a thorough quality control process by our repair shop manager, the Panerai Submersible Chrono 1000 is ready for our showcase.
