Rolex Submariner Stainless Steel Watch Repair

The history of Rolex dates back to 1905, when the company, then located in London, England, was still known as Wilsdorf and Davis. The company was named after the founders, Alfred Davis and his brother-in-law, Hans Wilsdorf. During that time, Wilsdorf and Davis were placing imported Hermann Aegler’s Swiss movements in watch cases made by Dennison and others. The earliest versions of these wristwatches were usually marked “W&D” inside the casebook and sold to jewelers who would then put their own names on the dials.

In 1915, the company name was registered under “Rolex” after Wilsdorf trademarked the name in 1908. Though not confirmed by Wilsdorf, there is speculation that the name Rolex was came from the contraction of the words, “horological excellence” translated from the French phrase, “horlogerie exquise”. Wilsdorf felt that the made-up word, “Rolex” sounded like a watch being wound, making it onomatopoeic. He thought the word was easy to pronounce in any language and the fact that it was short enough to fit on the face of a watch made it a great choice for their brand’s name. Rolex was awarded a Class A Precision certificate, a recognition usually given to marine chronometers, in 1914 by the Kew Observatory.

Due to high costs from wartime taxes on luxury important and export fees on silver and gold, Wilsdorf left England in 1919 and moved to Geneva, Switzerland. The company then took on several names such as the Rolex Watch Company and Montres Rolex, SA, and finally, Rolex, SA. When Wilsdorf’s wife passed away in 1944, he established a private trust, the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. He then left all of his Rolex shares to the trust, assuring the company’s income would go to charity. Since his passing in 1960, the company has been owned and run by the trust. In present day, Rolex watches continue to have a reputation as status symbols and the brand is valued at an estimated $8.053 billion.

The Rolex Submariner is one of the most iconic models from this brand. When it comes to divers watches the Submariner has been recognized as the first luxury wristwatch able to reach depths of 100 meters or 330 feet.
