Zenith El Primero Watch Repair

Our story today brings us to a movement that has been making history since the beginning of the first chronograph wrist movements. It was first introduced in 1969 till it reached the end of its manufacturing in 1986. The El Primero movement has been used to power watches like the Rolex Daytona.

The Zenith watch that came into our store for repair is the Zenith Defy El Primero 21 reference 95.9002.9004. This watch is a true piece of watch engineering. The movement provides a very sophisticated mechanism under an amazing skeletonize dial. What sets this watch apart from the rest, is the double mechanism composed of an individual mechanism for the time and another for the chronograph. What this means is that the timing mechanism can be completely stopped if needed and still have a separate power reserve for the chronograph running separately. Another jaw dropping functionality on this watch is the chronograph. Press down on the start pusher at 2 o’clock and the long chrono hand will spin at an incredible speed (one second per full rotation). This is possible thanks to an oscillating system that beats at 360,000 vph (vibrations per hour).

Zenith El Primero Watch Repair
During our overhauling service our Swiss trained master watchmaker disassembles the movement using a series of precision tools in order not to damage the movement. Each part, gear and screw is some small that everything needs to be worked under magnification. The first step on our service is cleaning the movement on our Tempo Ultrasonic cleaning machines. After submerging the movement in a 4 step cleaning and rinsing solution along with powerful ultrasonic vibrations, the El Primero movement is ready to be reassembled. The case for this Zenith was in perfect condition in this case but normally our in-house master polisher would detail the case and bracelet as the movement is being worked on. After putting the movement back together, the watch undergoes a thorough quality control process in which the automatic movement is checked making sure it powers the movement correctly. After this process is completed the watch is ready to be returned to our client.
